The Adam Smith Building is a business centre that houses several large international organisations and provides a workplace for approximately 6,000 professionals. The atrium, a central space at the heart of the building, has been completely renovated. Only circular materials and furniture were used in the atrium, including repurposed items from Casala’s ReFurniture programme.
The interior architect developed an integrated circular hospitality concept, where working, meeting, relaxing, and having lunch come together within a sustainable design. An emphasis on reused furnishings ensures that the renewed atrium not only feels contemporary and inviting, but also reflects a long-term commitment to circularity.
Refurbishing this furniture resulted in over 90% CO₂ savings compared to producing new items. Additionally, 94% of the furniture was reused.
Existing chairs that we bought back from Stadhalle Gerlingen in Germany, were thoroughly inspected in our local circular hub and fitted with new parts where needed. They were reupholstered using a sustainable fabric made with 45% recycled wool. Various powder coat colours were chosen for the frames, which are part of the overall design concept. During the powder-coating process, any residue is collected and reused, resulting in zero waste.

Environmental impact report
